As the Lone Star State’s capital, Austin boasts understandably Texas-sized shopping appeal. The Drag, with a mix of local and chain stores, ranks as the main shopping, dining and fun area for University of Texas students. Arboretum at Great Hills, with Pottery Barn and Tommy Bahama, provides a park-like atmosphere for relaxed, outdoor shopping. Barton Creek Square, anchored by a Nordstrom, has more than 180 stores. Founded in Austin, Whole Foods Market’s headquarters store, at Sixth and Lamar, is a destination for natural foods, in-store dining stations, clothing, organic body products, and live music on the roof-top plaza. Outside town in an historic farmhouse on Lyons Road, Boggy Creek Farm is a USDA certified organic market featuring Larry’s smoke-dried tomatoes and such. SoCo, a hip strip anchored by Allen’s Boots (one of Austin’s few places stocking authentic western wear), features eclectic shops, boutiques, and galleries, plus dining, and it stays open late, as in 10 p.m., on monthly first Thursdays.
The Second Street District also mixes retail and restaurants. Rain or shine on Saturdays, the Sunset Valley Farmers Market offers produce, organic coffee, baked goods, handmade jewelry, stained glass, sculpture, soap, flowers, soy candles, and plants. Wild About Music bills itself as the world’s first art and gift gallery dedicated entirely to music and related products. West Sixth Street’s West End has galleries, gift shops, antiques, food and other specialty shops, and the open-air West Sixth Street Artists Market operates Saturdays and Sundays until 6 p.m. Highland Mall, anchored by Dillard’s, Foley’s and JCPenney, is home to some 150 stores. Lakeline Mall and Lakeline Plaza have Dillard’s, Foley’s, Mervyn’s, JCPenney’s and Sears. Northcross Mall, home to the Chaparral Ice Skating Rink, has Oshman’s and Bealls. Neiman Marcus Last Call, at 4115 S. Capital of Texas Hwy, doubles as haute couture heaven with final markdowns on designer goods. Big savings also are had at Prime Outlets – San Marcos and at Tanger Outlet center, the state’s largest outlet shopping destination.
